From the Beginning was realized in collaboration with Protocinema within the exchange programme between the 15th Istanbul Biennial, titled “A Good Neighbour,” and the Liverpool Biennial, titled “Beautiful World, Where Are You?” The project was presented as an online work on the Liverpool Biennial website during the biennial.
Drawing on the conceptual frameworks of the 15th Istanbul Biennial and the Liverpool Biennial, From the Beginning was carried out in six different neighbourhoods of Istanbul with 48 participants aged between 4 and 14. Consisting of sound, video, and a network map, the project forms a structure that engages with the core concepts of A Good Neighbour and Beautiful World, Where Are You?
In the project, children were asked to sing their favourite songs and the parts of those songs they liked most, and the process was recorded. The recorded voices and phrases were brought together and turned into a single piece, supported by a musical backing to create coherence. The video, streaming in sync with the sound, was edited so as to make each sentence visible. In addition, a network map was created using Graph Commons, showing the spaces, children, songs, sentences, and the relationships between them, as well as the project’s process and conceptual motivation.
